Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I join your sorority?
A: Contact any of the active members and get info about recruitment. This is you know things such as dates and what events you can get to know our members at.
Q: What are some requirements to be a member? Do I have to be a lesbian/bisexual/transgender woman?
A: You do not have to be any of those things to join our sorority! We emphasize an accepting and open environment to all women and welcome straight allies with open arms as well as women who identify with the LGBT community. To remain an active member, however, you do have be a current undergraduate student at K-State, must maintain a certain GPA with the university (2.5), and membership dues must be reasonably up-to-date. Note: When accepted into the sorority as a new member, your experience with us your first semester will determine if we vote you in at the end of the semester to become an active member.
Q: Who can come to the recruitment events?
A: Anyone! Bring your friends, significant others, siblings, children, or anyone you think may be interested in our sorority! Attending recruitment events does not mean you are required to join, so just come to have fun! Note: Attending the bid dinner/interview session does indicate a level of commitment; these events are intended for girls joining this semester.
Q: What are membership dues?
A: This semesters dues will equal $250 for the full semester. This will pay for our sorority’s insurance, our dues to the Panhellenic Council, GRL Nationals, and some minor expenses the sorority has (events, tee-shirts, etc). All members have the option of fundraising some or all of their dues. It should also be noted that our dues are a fraction of the size of other sororities – since we are un-housed, our costs are significantly lower.
Q: How is your sorority different from other sororities?
A: While we still have traditional aspects of the Greek system – we are recognized under K-State’s Panhellenic Council and participate in many Greek events– we are also unique from other sororities. We are much smaller than other Greek organizations at Kansas State, but our smaller numbers provide for an intimate family experience that builds strong connections between siblings.
Q: Why don’t you have a house?
A: Our sorority in the past has had neither the resources nor the demand in the past to have a house. Most sororities have a house due to support from alumni, and since we are rather young on campus those resources are not available. The possibility of having one in the future is an option, but for now all of our sisters live in their own living arrangements, which keeps our dues down significantly.
Q: What time commitment is required to be a member?
A: New Members will be expected to attend weekly meetings that alternate every week between business meetings and social meetings. These can last anywhere from one to three hours. These are strictly required for all members and are only excused in cases of illness, emergency, or school conflict. There will also be New Member Education classes once a week for one hour at a time determined by the class as a whole, as well as weekly study hours. Membership in the sorority usually results in helping with various philanthropic events as well. If you have a busy schedule, don’t think you can’t join. We are willing to work with you; we’re busy people too.
Q: What is your involvement with the community?
A: We are connected to Delta Lambda Phi, the progressive fraternity on campus, and LGBTQ and More, the gay-straight alliance, as well as the LGBT Resource Center. In the spring, our philanthropy will be the Flint Hills PFLAG Pride Prom, a prom designed for high school and college students (and adults) to have a progressive and inclusive prom experience during the Prom season. We have also sponsored as a sorority a national conference (Out and Greek), worked with SafeZone and volunteered with Regional AIDS Project.
Q: I am transgender M-to-F OR F-to-M and am seeking a family where I can be accepted for who I am. Can I join?
A: The answer to both of these is an emphatic and joyous yes! Our constitution is specifically written with language to be welcoming to transgender members. We love our transgender brothers and sisters, and if you want to specifically meet with a transgender member before joining to see what it’s like, we’d be more that happy to introduce you.
Q: I am not ‘out’ to my family, or to anybody else in the K-State Community. Can I still join?
A: We are welcoming of anybody who is seeking a family at K-State. Coming out is a personal journey, and it is your decision as to if and when to tell your family. What we can offer is support for when you do decide to come out; many of our members can testify that relying on sisterhood when coming out to family can make it all easier.
